Leadership Team Application

Thank you for applying to be a member of the Buchanan High School Marching Band Leadership Team! Drum Majors, Colorguard Captains, and Section Leaders are entrusted with a tremendous amount of responsibility and will be asked to fully commit to their assigned duties. Leadership team members serve as a link between the students and the staff and will be expected to work closely with everyone involved in the marching band to ensure a smooth and successful marching season. Being a leadership team member will stretch you to serve others in ways you never thought possible, so be ready!

Prerequisite: Leadership Team applicants are required to have performed in a competitive high school marching band for at least one year. Members of last year’s leadership team must reapply this year.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Each Leadership Team Member will:

  • Attend every scheduled marching band function, including all rehearsals, competitions, and performances outside of the school day.

  • Serve fellow students with a passion and desire to ensure that everyone has a positive experience.

  • Act as a liaison between the staff and students.

  • Be the first person to arrive and the last to leave all band events to ensure everything is done right.

  • Attend leadership team meetings during the summer and weekly throughout the school year.

  • Attend or participate in leadership workshops (TBA).

Additional Roles and Responsibilities for Drum Majors:

  • Conduct the marching band at every rehearsal, football game, competition and performance.

  • Conduct the pep band at football games, rallies, and other events.

  • Lead leadership team meetings during the summer and weekly throughout the school year, including creating meeting agendas.

Application Process

Each Buchanan HS Leadership Team applicant must complete the following:

A. Video Presentation. Prepare and record a video presentation. The video should include your responses to the following ideas:

  1. Why do you want to be a member of the leadership team?

  2. Highlight examples of your leadership qualities, work ethic, and willingness to serve others.

  3. Describe your involvement in and the impact you’ve made on our music program.

  4. What are the greatest challenges you would face if you were selected to be a member of the leadership team?

  5. Explain how you intend to address the issues of personal conflict that arise in our program (or section) throughout the year (i.e. student drama!).

Video Instructions (Recorded in Flip - link: https://flip.com/48262779)

  • Record your video in Flip before submitting your application.

  • Please limit the length of the presentation to no more than five (5) minutes.

  • Your video should show you at your very best and exemplify the reasons why you should be considered for the position you are applying for.

  • You may speak freely from notes or read something you’ve prepared. No matter which approach you choose, make sure you speak with personality and sincerity.

  • Keep it professional. Creativity in presentation is okay, but only to the extent that it supports you as a model candidate for the leadership team and represents the high regard we place on student leadership in our program.

  • After you have recorded and posted your Flip to the topic, click ‘Share Video’, copy the link, and paste it into your application.

B. Recommendations. Select three (3) fellow students to complete recommendation forms utilizing the criteria below. Please be kind and courteous when asking for their recommendation. You will provide the three names of students who have agreed to recommend you in the application. Share this link with each person providing a recommendation: http://www.becmusic.org/recommendation

  1. One recommendation must be from a non-senior marching band member in your grade level.

  2. One recommendation must be from a non-senior marching band member not in your grade level.

  3. One recommendation may be from a current non-senior marching band student of your choice.

*If there isn’t a member of your section who meets this criteria, you may have a second recommendation from someone in the same grade level.

C. Interview. Interview with directors and current drum majors. This will take place after the application deadline. When and if this step is completed is at the director’s discretion.

D. Parent/Guardian Approval. We will contact your parents/guardians for permission to apply and accept a position on the leadership team, if selected. You do not need to do anything to complete this step.

Application must be submitted by 11:59pm on Monday, March 4, 2024 for consideration.

You may apply for both drum major and colorguard captain/section leader. However, you must submit TWO (2) separate applications. You may use the same video for both, or you may make a second video.

If you are applying for two positions, you need to ask for a second set of student recommendations based on the two different criteria. You should have 6 total recommendations. You may ask the same person to fill out two separate recommendations for each position you are applying for as long as that person meets the recommendation criteria.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for applying!
